our story
The Smith Hughes Foundation was established in 2025 and has a history like no other.
In 2023, Jamie Hughes life took a very unexpected turn. On Monday, March 6, Jamie woke up and started her day as normal, walking the dogs, listening to her rosary, but when she got home and threw the ball for her dogs, she felt a strange pop.
Because of this, she began to feel very hot and disoriented, as if about to faint, so she decided to go lay down in front of her table side fan to cool off. Luckily, shortly after laying down, her husband Brad had returned home from work to find Jamie face down with her legs hanging off the bed. Brad immediately asked Jamie what was wrong, and Jamie responded with gibberish and slurn words, although she thought she was speaking perfectly clear.
Brad, not knowing exactly what to do, calls his son Jake from upstairs to come check on Jamie. Jake at the time was a student at Elder High School and had taken a test on strokes that morning. When Jake came to Jamie he quickly initiated the BE FAST stroke test, Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and the most critical, Time. When Jake realized Jamie was definitely having a stroke he looked to Brad and calmly said, “Call. She needs to go, now.”
Paramedics soon arrived and Jamie was brought to Good Samaritan hospital and received an emergency thrombectomy, a procedure to remove a blood clot from a blood vessel, often used to treat strokes. Jamies blood clot was around the size of a golf ball and was successfully removed by Dr. Ringer.
With only a few residuals, Jamie is happy, healthy and her faith is stronger than ever.
Our foundation was established to help families, like ours, who may need assistance with anything and everything that comes with life after a stroke.
Life now
Now, two years later, Jamie continues to walk her dogs on the trail and works at Our Lady of Victory in the lunch room. She pushes herself every day to get stronger and loves being around the kids at work. We are very blessed to have been given the outcome we had and thank all of Jamies doctors, family, friends and espeically God. Our faith has kept our family close and has watched over Jamie throughout her recovery, we are very grateful for the life we get to have with Jamie still by our sides.
